Cryonics & Insurance – UK Residents Only – December 2016

Over the last five years, we have been asked by many people living in other parts of the world to arrange Life Insurance for the purpose of Cryonics. However, as financial advisers who are licensed in the United Kingdom, we are only permitted to advise people who are residents in the UK.

We have looked tirelessly for a solution to this situation problem, which would allow us to advise clients from other countries, but at this moment in time we still do not have a product to offer. When we recommend products for our clients, we run strict research and due diligence and so far no “International Whole of Life Assurance ” product we have found has met our strict criteria.

UK Residents Only  …

We are still completely committed to assisting the UK cryonics community in finding the best Life Insurance for their needs and we are still the appointed Insurance agent for both The Cryonics Institute and Alcor Life Extension Foundation in the UK. We advise members of both organisations and offer completely independent financial advice.

We are also very proud of our relationship with Cryonics UK and would recommend that any new Cryonics member consider joining this group and interacting with other members. We have attended a number of Cryonics UK meetings in the past and will continue to update members in the future on insurance matters.

Unusual Risks are experts at finding Insurance for Cryonics members resident in the UK and regularly advise people on the effects of inflation, currency fluctuations and trust planning issues which effect members of Alcor and the Cryonics Institute. However, at this moment in time, we are unfortunately unable to assist people living outside the UK at this moment in time.

Unusual Risks Attend Cryonics UK Meeting

Recently our lead financial adviser Chris Morgan attended the Cryonics UK meeting in Sheffield and updated the group on recent developments around Cryonics and Insurance in the UK. Cryonics UK is a non-profit organisation set in place to provide assistance when necessary to those within the UK who wish for their body to be cryopreserved with either Alcor or The Cryonics Institute.

These are some useful key points from Chris’s presentation …

* 90% of Cryonics people are either funding or intending to fund their Cryonics agreements using some form of Life Insurance.

* 10% of cryonics people are intending to use cash or some other form of investment.

* The average amount of insurance taken for the purpose of Cryonics is currently £109,461

* The lowest amount of insurance recorded was £60,000 and highest recorded £270,000 for the purpose of cryonics.

*33% of UK Insurance providers currently offer an absolute trust, alongside their insurance policies, making them suitable for funding Cryonics.

Chris also let the group know that he’s still looking at International Insurance providers, that may be able to offer insurance cover to cryonics members abroad,  but to date has not found a suitable provider. Before leaving Chris answered questions within a group Q&A session and agreed to return and present to the group again in the future.

Anyone in the UK looking at cryonics should consider going along to a Cryonics UK training meeting. Forthcoming dates for their training events can be found at their website. www.cryonics-uk.org/training.html

Cryonics and Insurance Survey 2016 …

Unusual Risks, the Cryonics Insurance advisers are today announcing the results of their latest Cryonics and Insurance Survey. After conducting research into the UK’s leading insurance providers, they can now confirm that 33% now offer Absolute Trust documentation, alongside their Insurance policies, making them the most suitable for funding Cryonics.

The survey was conducted to confirm the compatibility of UK Insurance policies, alongside the membership requirements of both Alcor Life Extension Foundation and The Cryonics Institute. Both organisations accept Insurance as a form of payment for Cryopreservation. In a previous Cryonics and Insurance Survey it was established that 90% of Cryonicists use Insurance to fund their agreements.

Speaking about their survey, Chris Morgan, Lead Financial Adviser of Unusual Risks Said;

‘In previous Cryonics and Insurance Surveys we have focused on the types and amounts of funding being used by Cryonics Members to fund their agreements. In this survey we have elected to do something different and focused on the leading insurance providers and the suitability of their products for funding Cryonics’.

‘Both Alcor and Cryonics Institute require members to place their Insurance into a Trust to make sure funding is completed in a timely manner at the point of suspension. We have established that not all insurance providers provide the correct Trust Documentation, with only 33% of Insurers currently offering the correct type of documentation alongside their policies’.

In theory Cryonics members could use any insurance policy to fund their agreement, with a solicitor writing an irrevocable trust deed alongside. However, we have met a number people who have found this method to be expensive. Unusual Risks have conducted research and are able to offer Insurance providers that offer an “Absolute Trust” document alongside their policies free of charge.

Chris Morgan and Unusual Risks have been helping the UK Cryonics community for the last five years to arrange all types of insurance policies for their needs. In last year’s survey they established the average amount of Insurance being taken for the purpose of Cryonics is currently £109,461, with the lowest amount disclosed £60,000 and highest disclosed £270,000.

Cryonics & Life Insurance For Existing Members …

Unusual Risks have been approached many times over the last five years by existing Alcor and Cryonics Institute Members, with concerns about their existing Life Insurance policies. We are the approved Insurance agent in the UK for both organisations and we are always happy to assist existing members to assess their existing Life Insurance policies.

Here’s a guide for existing members with some handy hints and tips to help members avoid future shortfalls.

Paperwork

As existing members of Cryonics Institute or Alcor Life Extension Foundation you will be aware that it is important that all of your paperwork is readily available. You would be surprised how many people approach us and they don’t have their Insurance policy schedules, policy information and trust documents to hand.

Statements

Most Insurance Companies provide their policy holders with an annual statement, which can be very useful to check the current sum assured of your policy. It will also confirm the monthly, or annual premium that you pay and if the policy is index linked to inflation. When was the last time you checked your current Life Insurance Policy?

Inflation

The cost of Cryonics does increase with time and it’s important to review your arrangements to make sure that you still have enough money in your policy to cover all costs involved. Alcor members will find that their costs increase roughly in line with inflation each year and Cryonics Institute members may find that their costs associated with transportation and repatriation also increases in time.

Increasing Cover

If you find that your policy is likely to be short, then it’s advisable to compare a top up to your existing policy, with all the premium rates that are currently available in the market. On several occasions we have found that topping up a “legacy” policy has been more expensive than taking a second policy and we always check the Whole of Market for our clients.

Trust Documents

All Life Insurance for cryonics should be placed into some form of irrevocable, fixed, bare or absolute trust, where the beneficiary cannot be altered. When was the last time that you checked yours to make sure your trustees were still in order and it is up to date in line with your wishes? If you need a Cryonics friendly solicitor to help you with this, we have someone we can refer you to.

Unusual Risks are experts at finding Insurance for Cryonics members and regularly advise people on the effects of inflation, currency fluctuations and trust planning issues which effect members of Alcor and the Cryonics Institute. On many occasions we have met clients who’s policies are unsuitable for Cryonics and would urge people who have doubt about their policy to seek specialist advice.

Which type of Insurance is the best For Cryonics? …

In a previous article we shared with you some of the types of Insurance that may be unsuitable for people funding their Cryonics agreement with Alcor Life Extension Foundation or The Cryonics Institute. Occasionally we are asked to comment on policies that people have in place already, or are considering taking with other financial advisers.

We have recently encountered a few interesting situations where clients had received financial advice from a mainstream financial advisers, with zero knowledge about Cryonics. These are some of issues that I thought it would be relevant to share with the wider Cryonics Community.

Whole of Life Assurance

Whole of Life Assurance is definitely the best type of Insurance for funding Cryonics and as you have seem in the previous article, there are a number of  different types of Insurance that people have tried to use unsuccessfully. Whole of Life Assurance is Life Insurance that will offer a guaranteed payout at the appropriate time. We have met a number of Clients who has been offered Insurance that in our opinion was unsuitable for their needs.

Low Start Premiums

We have met a number of people recently who have been attracted to the discounted  premiums of Low Start Whole of Life Assurance plans. Although these “Skimmed” plans start out lower than their “Full Fat” alternatives, they almost always end up with higher premiums later in their term. When selecting a Life Insurance to fund your Cryonics it is essential to consider your future affordability, particularly in retirement.

Inflation Linking

On a number of occasions we have met people who have not been advised to inflation link their Whole of Life Assurance. For some people this will mean that the original purpose to fund cryonics will not be met, because the cost associated with standby, transportation and membership agreements tend to increase in time.  It is essential that you take out an amount of Life Insurance that keeps pace with inflation.

Currency Fluctuations

There have also been a few people that we have met, who have taken Life Insurance and not considered that there is normally a difference between the US Dollar and UK Pound sterling exchange rates. If you are considering taking either a Cryonics Institute or Alcor Life Extension Foundation membership, then their services will need to be paid for in US Dollars. It is essential that your planning takes into account the possibility of currently fluctuations in the future.

Trust Documentation

We recently met someone who’s Financial Adviser had advised them not to place their Whole of Life Insurance into an Absolute Trust to their Cryonics provider, because it would be final. They were advised to complete a Discretionary Flexible Trust, which is not accepted by cryonics providers. It is essential that your financial adviser understands the requirements of the service provider and helps you to complete Trust documentation correctly.

Let us help you find the right Life Insurance for Cryonics …

We hope you find this information helpful! Sometimes we are left wondering why anyone would try to fo this themselves or use a mainstream financial adviser to arrange their Life Insurance for Cryonic? Unusual Risks are experts at finding Insurance for Cryonics members and regularly advise people on the effects of inflation, currency fluctuations and trust planning issues which effect members of Alcor and the Cryonics Institute.

Which types of Insurance are unsuitable for Cryonics? …

Unusual Risks are the UK’s leading financial advisers at helping Cryonics people to find Insurance to fund their agreements, with either Alcor Life Extension Foundation or The Cryonics Institute. Occasionally we meet clients who require advice on an Insurance policy that they already have in place as part of their existing funding arrangements.

Over the last five years we have encountered a number of interesting scenario’s, that we would like to share with the Cryonics Community and our reasons why we feel it could effect your ability to pay for your Cryonics in the future. If you would like advice on either an existing Life Insurance or which is the best Life Insurance for Cryonics we are always happy to assist.

Decreasing Term Assurance

This form of Life Insurance reduces over time and is most suitable for protecting a Mortgage or Loan with a set term attached. We have encountered Cryonics clients who have this type of insurance and were under the impression they had a different type of cover that would give them a lump sum benefit at the end. This policy is definitely unsuitable for Cryonics.

Endowment Policies

An Endowment Policy could provide a suitable amount of Life Insurance that may effectively be used for Cryonics. However, we have met a number of Cryonics clients who have policies that have dramatically under performed, making their final lump sum benefits doubtful. Therefore this type of policy needs to be reviewed and checked regularly if used for cryonics.

Level Life Assurance

We have met a number of Cryonics members, that have taken Life Insurance several years ago, but were advised to take a policy that does not increase in line with inflation. The effect is that their sum assured is not keeping pace with the cost of their Cryonics services and at some point it is likely they will need to take additional Insurance to close any funding gaps.

Low Start Life Assurance

Over the years there have been a number of “Low Start” Insurance plans launched into the UK Insurance market. Low Start Endowments were terrible performers and something to be avoided at all costs. If an Insurance is claiming to offer discounts in the early years, be sure to seek advice as this could seriously cost you in the later years of the plan. Approach with caution!

Level Term Assurance

This type of Insurance can be suitable for cryonics members who already have cash in background, or an asset they plan to use to fund their agreement like shares or a property. For people that do not have the assets already, then this once again is an unsuitable type of Insurance because it has a set term and potentially could finish before the benefits are needed.

Cryonics and Insurance ….. What are the main factors when taking Insurance?

Unusual Risks are the UK’s leading financial advisers helping people to find Life Insurance for the purpose of funding Cryonics. Over the last five years we have helped many Cryonicists complete the process of joining Alcor Life Extension Foundation or Cryonics Institute by taking out Life Insurance.

We are the approved Insurance agents in the UK for both organisations and have advised many clients on their Life Insurance requirements. Below are some of the most popular factors to consider when taking out Life Insurance for funding Cryonics …

Benjamin, Aged 40, Computer Scientist.

Benjamin first became interested in Cryonics over 20 years ago and he decided that taking Insurance was the best way to fund the fees involved. At the time he took out a Life Insurance that combined both Insurance and Investment elements, similar to the Endowment plans commonly used for repaying Mortgages.

He has become aware over the last few years that the plan was falling short of the original projections, as the Insurance Company had been sending him review letters. He has also been aware that the price of Full Body services with his Cryonics provider had also increased significantly since taking the Insurance 20 years ago.

Here are some of the Key Issues for Benjamin and other’s looking to fund their Cryonics agreements.

Members Fees

Both Alcor and Cryonics Institute have very different approaches to their pricing policies and we always offer a full range of quotations, for anyone approaching us for advice about Cryonics. The amount of Insurance that you put in place is a very personal individual decision and we are very experienced advising people on the best amounts for them to put in place.

Inflation Costs

It is wise and sensible to make provisions for the possible cost of Cryonics both now and in the future. For example, any Insurance plan you take out should either be large enough to take into account future prices rises, or have some form of inflation strategy built within the plan.

Currency Fluctuations

You should also remember that the majority of the costs involved with Cryonics have to be paid in US Dollars, so any Insurance plan that you take out needs to have provisions for currency fluctuations between the US Dollar and UK Pounds Sterling. We are also experienced at helping Cryonicists make provisions for both Currency fluctuations and Inflation Costs.

Trust Documentation

Both Alcor and Cryonics Institute require that any Life Insurance policy be placed into trust directly to them. In theory any Insurance plan could be used for this purpose, alongside an Irrevocable Trust Deed. However, this method is often expensive when compared to using Insurance companies that offer their clients an “Absolute Trust” document without charge.

And Benjamin?

All of these factors can make taking Insurance for Cryonics very complicated and are always happy to provide help and guidance to anyone concerned with taking Insurance. We helped Benjamin to calculate the potential shortfall in the future and recommended a policy to help bridge the shortfall in his planning.

Cryonics and Insurance – Questions & Answers – Autumn 2015

Unusual Risks recently published an article with details of where to find relevant information about Cryonics.

In response to this we received an excellent suggestion from a long standing Cryonics Institute member that we might also like to highlight that there are in fact two Yahoo groups that people can share information about Cryonics.

Cryonet Yahoo Group

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/New_Cryonet/info

Longevity Report Yahoo Group

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/LongevityReport/info

We have since agreed to do a Q&A for members of these groups, from questions they forwarded to us by email.

Life Assurance Questions

Do I have to use Life Assurance to fund Cryonics?

Life Assurance has become the most popular method of funding Cryonics without doubt, but there still remains the option to pay for Cryonics via an up-front cash payment. We understand that The Cryonics Institute, Alcor Life Extension Foundation and Kriorus all accept cash payments.

Are there any up-front costs to setting up a Life Assurance plan?

Most Life Assurance providers offer commission to financial advisers, that is paid in return for introducing the client to them. This means that there is no “up front” cost to taking life assurance and no direct fee payment due for advice. Unusual Risks will also organise the trust documents required by Alcor and Cryonics Institute free of charge for our clients applying for Life Assurance.

Do you arrange Life Assurance for non UK Citizens?

Unfortunately Unusual Risks are only licenced to arrange Life Assurance for clients resident in the United Kingdom. If you are resident in the UK then contact us www.cryonicsinsurance.co.uk  If you are resident in the USA then we suggest contacting Rudi Hoffman. www.rudihoffman.com

Trust Document Questions

How do I select my trustees?

When selecting trustees for your Absolute Trust or Irrevocable Trust document you should endeavour to appoint people younger than yourself. Many people select family members they believe will carry out their wishes, but also appoint another cryonics member they have may met through an organisation like www.cryonics-uk.org

On a number of occasions we have met clients who have also appointed a trustee from within the Alcor or Cryonics Institute organisations. In some cases clients have appointed a professional trustee to perform their wishes and Unusual Risks have a solicitor that we can recommend that is “Cryonics Friendly” for those wanting to pursue this option.

Is an Absolute Trust exactly as it says?

Yes, an Absolute trust document is “Absolute”, which means that once you have completed the document and it has been lodged with the Insurance Company it cannot be altered. Effectively when you take out insurance and place it into an Absolute trust, you “Gift” the Insurance policy to either Alcor or Cryonics Institute and the Trust cannot be altered or amended in any way.

Can I leave excess money to my family?

In some cases we have been asked by clients to arrange an amount of Insurance that may be more than is required by Alcor and Cryonics Institute to fund their Cryonics Agreement. In several cases clients have approached their service provider and requested that any excess monies be forwarded to either their estate or a family member.

We understand that both Alcor and Cryonics Institute are very reasonable about this issue and we suggest contacting them if you require further confirmation on this subject.

Where to find Information about Cryonics?

Unusual Risks are the UK’s leading financial advisers helping the Cryonics Community find Life Insurance funding for their membership agreements. We are always asked by new clients for relevant information about Cryopreservation when people approach us for financial advice.

As financial advisers we do not have a specific knowledge of the process involved with Cryopreservation, so we therefore refer people to the main international providers of Cryonics Services and the Cryonics UK organisation. Cryonics and Insurance Survey 2015 …

Unusual Risks, the Cryonics Insurance advisers are today announcing the results of their second Cryonics and Insurance Survey. After conducting research into the financial needs of the Cryonics community in the UK, they can now confirm that the average amount of Insurance being taken for the purpose of Cryonics is currently £109,461.

The survey conducted amongst Cryonics UK members, existing clients of Unusual Risks and respondents to an online survey of people who were existing members of either Alcor Life Extension Foundation or The Cryonics Institute. This new study was conducted after feedback received from last year’s survey that looked at the different methods used by people to fund their Cryonics agreements.

Speaking about their survey, Chris Morgan, Lead Financial Adviser of Unusual Risks Said;

‘The purpose of this particular Cryonics and Insurance survey was to assess the amounts of Life Assurance that people are taking out to fund their Cryonics agreement. There is a great amount of discussion within the Cryonics Community as to the most appropriate amounts of Insurance to have in place for Cryonics’.

‘We realise that the amounts of Insurance that people take is an individual decision that needs to take into account issues such as currency fluctuations and future price increases in line with inflation. During the survey the lowest level of Life Assurance that was disclosed to us was £60,000 and the highest was £270,000’.

The wide differences in sum assured reflect a variety of service options that are available within the Cryonics Community and also policy holder’s individual attitude towards any future possible price increases. Last year’s Cryonics and Insurance Survey established that 90%* of Cryonics people were funding or intending to fund their agreements with an Insurance policy.

Chris Morgan and Unusual Risks have been helping the UK Cryonics community for the last five years to arrange all types of insurance policies for their needs. They are experienced at calculating future Cryonics insurance requirements and completing the appropriate trust documentation required by all of the leading Cryonics Service providers.

Unusual Risks would like to thank Cryonics UK for their help in publicising the Cryonics and Insurance Survey. If you require more information on Cryonics and Insurance in the UK you can contact Unusual Risks Mortgage & Insurance Services on 0845 474 3075, or email at Enquiries@unusualrisks.co.uk
