CRYONICS INSURANCE SURVEY 2018 – LIFE INSURANCE and LIFE ASSURANCE

Unusual Risks, the Cryonics Insurance advisers are today announcing the results of their fifth Cryonics and Insurance Survey. After conducting research into the financial needs of the Cryonics community in the UK, they can now confirm that the average amount of Insurance being taken for the purpose of Cryonics has risen to £113,250, from a previous average of £109,461.

The survey was conducted amongst existing clients of Unusual Risks and Cryonics UK members, who were either members of Alcor Life Extension Foundation or The Cryonics Institute. This year’s survey follows last year’s where Unusual Risks researched the number of Insurance providers who offer trust documentation suitable for Cryonics members.

Speaking about their survey, Chris Morgan, Lead Financial Adviser of Unusual Risks Said;

‘The purpose of the annual Cryonics and Insurance survey is to raise awareness of Cryonics and it’s accessibility through Whole of Life Assurance.  There is a great amount of discussion within the Cryonics Community as to the most appropriate amounts of Insurance to have in place for Cryonics and we are experts at helping them to find the right level of cover’,

‘We realise that the amounts of Insurance that people take is an individual decision, that needs to into account issues such as currency fluctuations and future price increases in line with inflation. During the recent survey the lowest level of Life Assurance that was disclosed to us was £60,000 and the highest was £270,000’.

The wide differences in sum assured reflect a variety of service options that are available within the Cryonics Community and also the policy holder’s individual attitude towards any future possible price increases. A previous Cryonics and Insurance Survey established that 90% of Cryonics people were funding or intending to fund their agreements with an Insurance policy.

Chris Morgan and Unusual Risks have been helping the UK Cryonics community for the last eight years to arrange all types of insurance policies for their needs. They are experienced at calculating future Cryonics insurance requirements and completing the appropriate trust documentation required by all of the leading Cryonics Service providers.

“A CHANCE TO LIVE FOREVER” … Cryonics and Life Insurance

On the 1st of May here in the UK. the morning television programme GMTV ran a short feature “A chance to live forever” and they interviewed the President of The Cryonics Institute Dennis Kowalski …

Little did Dennis know that prior to his interview the interviewers Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid had been making “Sport”, of the up coming piece using phrases, such as “weird”, “completely creepy” and the age old classic “Scam”! Maybe they were trying to grab some extras viewing ratings by once again sensationalising Cryonics?

Having been the victim of judgmental reporting in the past from the BBC on the subject of Cryonics, I was immediately concerned that this would once again turn into a one sided interview, satisfying only the needs off the press. I mean it was Piers Morgan interviewing Dennis, one of the worlds most formidable journalists, what possibly could go wrong?

Certainly Piers initial line of inquiry focused directly on the finances of The Cryonics Institute and he highlighted concerns that, huge amounts money was being made out of Cryonics as a “business”, This line of questioning was in a way a good thing, because of course it meant his researcher hadn’t really looked at the facts closely at all.

Dennis handled his question beautifully, pointing out that in fact that CI was in fact a non-profit organisation.

Dennis Kowalski, President of The Cryonics Institute .. “We are non profit organisation and we also open all our records up for public scrutiny, so you can tell how the money’s spent”.

The dynamics of the interview seemed to change at that moment, because Piers then allowed Dennis to explain his reasons for becoming a Cryonics member, which made very powerful viewing …

Quote from Dennis Kowalski, “I love life and I love my family, so I think it’s worth the opportunity to see if it will work” !

Dennis also continued to say, “How affordable Cryonics can be at $28,000 dollars, most people fund with life assurance”.

From what could of been a very sensational interview, with one of the worlds most controversial journalists, Dennis made an excellent job of normalising the subject of Cryonics. Piers was left with nothing to criticise, as he was left interviewing someone with loving intentions of looking after his family and was doing so with a non profit members organisation.

For once the British press reported the real story of Cryonics … here’s a link to the full interview for those who missed on GMTV last week.

Why it’s best to arrange Cryonics Insurance using a specialist financial adviser? …

Unusual Risks have been advising the Cryonics community in the United Kingdom for six years in regards to their Life Insurance requirements. We are the appointed insurance agents in the UK for both The Cryonics Institute and Alcor Life Extension Foundation and also regularly interact with Cryonics UK and their members.

Over the years we have met many clients who needed our specialist advice and assistance, due to the complex nature of taking insurance for the purpose of Cryonics. Some of the basic advice issues relate to how inflation effects future capital values, currency exchange rates and also any specialist trust documents required by Alcor and The Cryonic Institute.

Here are some of examples of advice issues that we have come across recently …

New Members

The first question that many new potential Cryonics members have of course is the monthly costs and premiums. Without knowing the monthly cost it is impossible for new members to know if they wish to proceed any further. Unusual Risks are able to provide Life Insurance quotations only, it’s recommended that new members contact their prospective Cryonics provider directly for their membership fees.

Legacy Policies

We have met a number of existing Cryonics members who have policies that were taken many years ago and the overall amount of existing cover is no longer sufficient to cover all their costs. Unusual Risks can help assess the shortfall and recommend the most efficient way of bridging any shortfall, normally with an additional top up policy.

Whole of Life Assurance

Countless times we have been able to prove that Whole of Life Assurance is the cheapest way to pay for Cryonics and are always happy to break down the figures for our clients. If you are assessing whether it’s best to pay for Cryonics by cash or to apply for Insurance then be sure to contact us for a comparison.

Cheapest Premiums – BMI Index

Some of the very cheapest Life Assurance providers may charge additional premium based upon a person for their BMI, so the headline cheapest provider online may not end up the cheapest after medical underwriting. Some of the top providers have a more relaxed attitude towards BMI than others, so it’s best to seek specialist advice before committing.

Cheapest Premiums – Pre-Existing Medical Conditions

Generally the very cheapest “standard rate” insurers are not the best place to look for Life Insurance, if you have any form of Pre-Existing medical conditions. There are in fact some Insurance providers that are more friendly towards those with medical conditions and it’s always best to seek specialist advice in these circumstances.

No Obligation Quotations

You are always very welcome to approach us for advice around Cryonics Insurance and any quotations are without obligation. If you are unsure if you would like to speak to a financial adviser in first instance, we suggest you attend one of the Cryonics UK meetings and speak to the existing members – many of which have used our services.

Cryonics UK – Training Dates 2018 – 2019

Unusual Risks are the appointed insurance agent, in the UK for both “The Cryonics Institute” and “Alcor Life Extension Foundation”. We also regularly advise and arrange insurance for members of Cryonics UK who provide emergency standby services to cryonics members.

Their training weekends provide coaching for potential volunteers and seasoned team members alike, in the practical business of getting cryonics patients stabilised and preserved. They also provide training, both in the UK and abroad, for cryonics groups from other countries.

Training covers a combination of theoretical and practical modules such as case management, logistics, cardio pulmonary support, induced hypothermia, stabilisation medications, perfusion, dry ice cool down, etc.

You may be a competent medical professional or a complete novice with no relevant training. If you fall into the latter category, don’t worry, many of our volunteers begin training without a medical background.

The training sessions also cover a lot of information which can take time to sink in. Potential volunteers typically cover two years of training weekends before reaching sufficient basic competence to assist on a live case.

If you are unsure whether or not volunteering is for you, feel free to observe. If you have signed up for cryonics or are thinking about it, training weekends will provide an insight into the processes and issues involved.

Attendance is free of charge and there is no need to book. Just turn up and join in!

Please be aware that training sessions may be attended by film / documentary makers, photographers or journalists. If you do not wish to be filmed, photographed or mentioned, you can request this on the day

Unusual Risks have attended several Cryonics UK and roadshow and training meetings, so we are fully briefed on the latest issues effecting Cryonics members.

Cryonics & Insurance – Frequently Asked Questions & Answers – Part 2

The next Cryonics UK meeting is getting close now, anyone attending the meeting on Saturday 13th January 2018 in Sheffield are welcome to bring questions to the meeting for Chris Morgan to answer, or email to him ahead of the meeting.

In Part 1 of FAQ’s we covered some real life questions that had been submitted to the Unusual Risks office, this is the second Part with further FAQ’s focused on Trust Planning.

Wills & Trusts

Q) Does the creation of an absolute trust document also require having my own a will?

A) The absolute Trust Documents that are required by The Cryonics Institute and Alcor Life Extension Foundation, will insure that your wishes are carried out, as the Life Insurance policy from then is separate to your estate. It is however a very good idea to make a will clarifying your wishes around Cryonics and to make sure your family are aware of your Cryonics Membership agreement.

How Many Trustees

Q) How many Trustees do you recommend when setting up an Absolute Trust?

A) We recommend three Trustees, with a balance of at least two in the UK. Normally there is a Trustee from either Alcor or Cryonics Institute, a second from Cryonics UK (if you are a member) and then we also recommend you appoint a family member or close friend, who is friendly towards your Cryonics wishes. Remember that the trustees will actually handle the proceeds of your policy collectively and make sure your wishes are carried out.

Costs Of Trusts

Q)  What is the cost of setting up an Absolute Trust? or a Fixed Trust with a solicitor?

A) We have met clients who have been asked to pay between £1,000 and £1,500 for the creation of a Fixed Trust with a solicitor, which of course is very expensive. Especially when most Life Assurance companies offer some form of suitable Trust documentation that can be used, when setting up your policy. Unusual Risks have a policy of helping you create your Absolute Trust document free of charge, when cover is taken out through us.

Topics for Part 3 – Questions and Topics will be directly from the Cryonics UK January meeting.

Cryonics & Insurance – Frequently Asked Questions & Answers – Part 1

In the build up to the next Cryonics UK meeting, we will be publishing some of the “real life” questions that we receive from people looking to take out Life Insurance for funding Cryonics. Anyone attending the meeting on Saturday 13th January 2018 in Sheffield are welcome to bring questions to the meeting for Chris Morgan to answer, or email to him ahead of the meeting.

Home Equity

Q) I’m considering taking a mortgage and have no children to inherit the capital from any home purchase. Could any equity be recruited to meet any Cryonics Institute or Alcor membership fees? and placed into a trust for them to receive as a beneficiary.

A) It’s highly unlikely that either Cryonics Institute or Alcor will accept property equity as a method of payment for their membership fees, as all fees have to be paid before they accept any body for suspension. As property forms part of an estate and has to be sold by the estate, potentially this could slow down the Cryonics process and mean your objectives will not be met.

Time To Sign

Q) What are the benefits of signing up now (I am 30 years old) rather than in my 40s, 50s and beyond? Other than obviously not being covered until I take out cover, but lets presume I live until at least my 50s or 60s. What would be the advantage of signing up now?

A) Simply, lower premiums and a reduced long term overall cost for your Cryonics membership. Whole of Life Cover is by far the cheapest way of paying for cryonics, especially if you have few pre-existing medical conditions. The more medical conditions you accumulate over time, the higher the premiums are likely to be for Life insurance.

Obtaining Quotes

Q)  What information do you need from me to be able to get an accurate quotation for premiums? I have a rough estimate but would like something more accurate before deciding to proceed.

A) In order to produce with an accurate quotation we normally have to go through a short telephone meeting, so we can explain all of the implications of taking insurance for Cryonics and gather detail about your requirements. We are very happy to produce quotations without obligation, so contact us to make an appointment today.

CRYONICS & INSURANCE SURVEY 2017 …..

“Spotlight On Trusts” – Unusual Risks have saved Cryonics Members thousands of pounds in solicitors costs, by providing trust documentation free of charge alongside their Life Insurance policies. We will be attending the Cryonics UK training day Saturday 13th January in Sheffield for a Q&A Session, with a special focus on absolute trusts, which is open to both existing and new Cryonics Members.

PRESS RELEASE – SUMMER 2017

Unusual Risks, the Cryonics Insurance advisers are today announcing the results of their latest Cryonics and Insurance Survey. After conducting research into the UK’s leading insurance providers, they can now confirm that 25% now offer Absolute Trusts, 58% Bare Trusts and 17% Fixed Trusts alongside their Insurance policies, potentially making their products suitable for funding Cryonics.

The survey was conducted to confirm the compatibility of UK Insurance policies, alongside the membership requirements of both Alcor Life Extension Foundation and The Cryonics Institute. Both organisations accept Insurance as a form of payment for Cryopreservation. Also in this year’s survey it was confirmed that the current average sum assured taken out was £110,343 with a minimum taken £60,000 and maximum taken £270,000.

Speaking about their survey, Chris Morgan, Lead Financial Adviser of Unusual Risks Said;

‘In this year’s survey we have researched the suitability of various companies trust documentation and established that Absolute, Bare and Fixed Trusts all are very similar with the eventual beneficiary nominated at outset. Once nominated the beneficiary cannot be changed on any of these trust arrangements.

‘Both Alcor and Cryonics Institute require members to place their Insurance into a Trust to make sure funding is completed in a timely manner at the point of suspension. We have established that most insurance providers provide suitable Trust Documentation in some form, but potential Cryonics members should seek specialist advice before applying for Life Insurance and completing these forms.

In theory Cryonics members could use any insurance policy to fund their agreement, with a solicitor writing an irrevocable trust deed alongside. However, we have met a number people who have found this method to be very expensive, with solicitors known to charge thousands of pounds for creating trust documents for clients.

Unusual Risks have conducted research and are able to use Insurance providers that offer an “Absolute”, “Bare” or “Fixed” Trust documents alongside their policies free of charge. Chris Morgan and Unusual Risks have been helping the UK Cryonics community for the last six years to arrange all types of insurance policies for their needs.

WHOLE OF LIFE ASSURANCE – The Cheapest Way To Pay For Your Cryonics ….

Several clients have contacted us recently with the view that they should take temporary Life Insurance, while they save enough money to pay cash for their membership agreement with The Cryonics Institute or Alcor Life Extension Foundation. For some this saving process will literally take years, without any guarantee they will make their required total.

My question to these clients, is why would you do that?

When the cheapest way to pay for most cryonics members is using Whole of Life Assurance! Many think that if there is a Life Assurance Company involved the cost of Cryonics will go up, when in fact for the majority of people this not the case and it will cost significantly less.

Here’s an example of two policies we arranged recently …

Client aged 25, Sum Assured £100,000, monthly premium £30.78

The total Amount Paid in would be £21,053 over 57 years, through to age 82 (UK Average Life Expectancy), Guaranteed to pay out £100,000.

Client aged 45, Sum Assured of £100,000, monthly premium £74.02

The total Amount Paid in would be £32,864 over 37 years, through to age 82 (UK Average Life Expectancy), Guaranteed to pay out £100,000

These examples show a number of interesting points, firstly the earlier you take out insurance the cheaper the overall cost of Cryonics will be. secondly, Whole of Life Assurance vastly reduces the overall cost of cryonics and does not increase the cost as commonly expected by members.

It’s important to note that clients with pre-existing medical conditions may be charged slightly higher amounts for their insurance so all cases should be looked at individually. Their are many issues for consideration when taking Life Insurance for Cryonics, including Trust Documents, Currency Fluctuations and Inflation Costs.

Cryonics Providers – Where To Find Useful Information?

Unusual Risks regularly receive contact from people looking to be Cryopreserved, many have not researched the subject in any way and have not even contacted any of the organisations that offer Cryoprservation services …

We are very happy to provide life insurance quotations for Cryonics and Insurance and offer advice around currency fluctuations, amount of cover needed, effects of inflation and completion of Absolute Trust documentation.

However, we suggest that potential Cryonics members should contact either Cryonics Institute or Alcor Life Extension Foundation first to have their general Cryonics questions answered. We are not able to answer questions about the Cryonics process and science involved with Cryonics.

We are the UK Insurance agent for both Cryonics Institute and Alcor Life Extension Foundation. Please note we are currently only able to arrange insurance for UK residents.
