Cryonics Insurance – Which Type of Policy is Best?

Unusual Risks have arranged many Insurance policies for Cryonics members over the last 5 years and each time we are asked about the different types of Insurance and which is the most appropriate for the purpose of funding Cryonics?

Currently we are the approved Insurance agents in the UK for both Alcor Life Extension Foundation and The Cryonics Institute and have advised many of their current members. We also advise members of Cryonics UK, who are the organisation that provide assistance and transportation to people in the UK wishing to be Cryopreserved upon death.

Here are some examples of the different types of insurance available in the UK  …

Decreasing Term Assurance – Decreasing amount of Life Assurance that reduces from the initial sum assured down to zero over the set term of the plan. This type of cover is not generally considered acceptable for Cryonics as benefits are reducing.

Level Term Assurance – Level amount of Life Assurance that remains in place for a set period of time. This type of Insurance can be used for Cryonics, but only in limited circumstances due to the fixed term nature of the contract.

Endowment Policy  – Provides a combination of Life Assurance and savings investment within the one policy. In theory this type of Insurance could be used for Cryonics, but has proven to be expensive in the past and has been known to under perform – falling short of original expectations.

Over 50’s Life Assurance – Generally provides smaller amounts of life cover, without the need for any medicals by the insurance provider. This type of policy has proven useful to some Cryonics members who have wanted to increase their cover, but are not eligible for standard types of insurance due to health reasons.

Whole of Life Assurance –  Provides a guaranteed benefit payable in the future at the point it is needed. Normally this type of Insurance is best used when there is specific purpose for the policy and is generally considered the most appropriate type of Insurance for the purpose of funding Cryonics.

Last year Unusual Risks surveyed members of the UK Cryonics community and asked them to indicate how they intended to fund their Cryopreservation agreement. 90% of respondents to the survey indicated some form of Life Assurance, whilst 10% of respondents indicated their intention to fund their agreement using cash or some other method of investment.

Also as part of the 2014 survey Unusual Risks asked people to specify which kind of Insurance Policy, they were using or were intending to use to fund their Cryonics agreement. 62% indicated Whole of Life Assurance, 24% indicated Level Term Assurance, 4% indicated Over 50’s Life Assurance and 10% were either using cash or some other method of Investment.

In the next few weeks we will be releasing our Cryonics and Insurance Survey 2015 which focuses on the amounts of Insurance that Cryonics members have in place currently ….

Cryonics Insurance – Whole of Life Assurance – The Cryonics Institute

Unusual Risks are today publishing the latest of their Cryonics and Insurance case examples. We have recently covered an Alcor Life Extension Foundation case, so we thought we should also publish an Cryonics Institute case as we are the approved Insurance agent in the United Kingdom for both organisations.

We have many existing UK clients for whom we have arranged Life Assurance or Life Insurance for the purpose of funding Cryonics.

Here’s an example of a Cryonics Institute case that we have recently completed.

Martin, Aged 53- Software Developer

Martin approached us for advice after  contacting The Cryonics Institute and deciding that he was interested in full body Cryo-preservation. He had already prepared a list of questions for us, that he had been left with after visiting their website and speaking with existing Cryonics UK members.

The main questions that he approached us with related to the correct type of insurance  and amount of insurance to have in place for funding Cryonics? He wanted to arrange an amount of  insurance to take into account membership costs, transportation costs, standby services, currency fluctuations and future inflation increases.

He was finding that all of these things together were making it difficult for him to make a decision, so we were able to offer him a range of options and quotations . The amount of insurance that people take out for cryonics is a very  personal decision, so we try and provide as much information as possible, before our client applies for insurance.

We also regularly advise people on the most appropriate type of Life Assurance for their circumstances, with consideration given to Whole of Life Assurance and Level Term Assurance options. Be sure to look out for our forthcoming guide to the different type of Life Assurance products in the UK that can be used for funding Cryonics.

Unusual Risks provide Cryonics Insurance advice for people from all types of backgrounds and are always happy to discuss your requirements without any obligation. We make donations to the UK Cryonics Charity, Human Organ Preservation Trust from every Cryonics case that we arrange on behalf of our clients.

Cryonics Insurance – Whole of Life Assurance – Alcor Life Extension Foundation

Unusual Risks are Independent Insurance Advisers that regularly offer Financial Advice to members of both Alcor Life Extension Foundation and The Cryonics Institute who are looking for insurance for the purpose of funding Cryonics.

We have many existing UK clients for whom we have arranged Life Assurance or Life Insurance to run alongside their Cryonics Membership Agreements.

Here’s an example of an Alcor case that we have recently completed. Cryonics is both affordable and open to everyone  …

Graham aged 38 and Rachel aged 42 – Computer Programmers

Graham and Rachel contacted us to obtain quotes for Whole of Life Assurance to fund their forthcoming Cryonics agreements. They have been considering Cryonics for some time and after careful research have finally decided to complete membership agreements with Alcor Life Extension Foundation.

They decided to contact Unusual Risks after finding our details on the Alcor website. They are particularly in need of advice regarding the amount of Insurance to put in place and also the correct trust documentation to complete. Like many people who contact us they wanted to check the monthly costs before making their final decision.

We were able to provide them with Whole of Life quotations for both the full body and neuro preservation options, which allowed them to consider them in greater detail and decide on the best one for them. The quotations took into consideration both currency fluctuations and potential future price increases due to inflation.

Unusual Risks assisted them to find the best policies and premium for their needs and also helped them to complete “Absolute Trust” documents in line with Alcor’s requirements. It is recommended that new members have insurance in place ahead of making any Cryonics membership application, because they will need to add the policy number to the membership forms.

Cryonic and Insurance – New Survey !

Unusual Risks are the UK’s leading advisers on Life Insurance for the purpose of funding Cryonics. We are the approved Insurance agents in the UK for both Cryonics Institute and Alcor Life Extension Foundation and have arranged insurance policies and trust documents for many of their existing members in the UK.

We are currently compiling the results to our latest survey into the financial needs of the Cryonics community and would like to hear from you regarding the two questions below. Following our first survey into the types of insurance and funding that people have in place for Cryonics, we received feedback asking us to survey the amount of insurance that people have in place?

Our first survey established that 90% of people taking out a Cryonics agreement were planning to fund their agreement via an Insurance policy. Click here to read more about our first cryonics survey. www.cryonics-insurance.co.uk/?p=136

We already hold a great amount of data about the amounts of Insurance taken by our own existing clients and plan to collate these figures very soon. However, we would like to ask the assistance of any long standing Cryonics members in the UK and anyone who has taken insurance independently from Unusual Risks. We would like to ask them to anonymously e-mail us the answers to these two very simple questions. enquiries@unusualrisks.co.uk

1) Which Cryonics Organisation are you a member of Alcor, Cryonics Institute or Kriorus?

2) What is the total amount of Life Insurance that you currently have in place to fund your Cryonics agreement?

Similar to our previous Cryonics and Insurance survey we plan to include any responses in our survey results to make certain that the sample is as realistic as possible. We look forward to publishing the results of our latest survey very soon, along with some new and exciting case studies that we are working on of cases we have completed recently.

Cryonics and Insurance – How much Life Insurance do you have in place?

Unusual Risks have been overwhelmed by the responses and feedback we have received following our recent Cryonics and Insurance Survey results ……….

We have decided to act upon some of this feedback and launch a further Cryonics and Insurance Survey. The responses we received were very upbeat about 95% of Cryonics membership agreements being funded by Life Assurance polices that were placed into trust to either Alcor Life Extension Foundation or The Cryonics Institute.

By far the most popular response and feedback we received was  …

Is there any indication as to the amount of insurance people have in place?

This seems to be a very important issue that interests a great number of both new and existing Cryonicists, so we have decided to respond and are already starting collating data assessing the “Average Sum Assured” for Cryonics members.

We already hold a great amount of data about the amounts of Insurance taken by our own existing clients and plan to collate these figures very soon.

However, would like to ask the assistance of any long standing Cryonics members in the UK and anyone who has taken insurance independently from Unusual Risks. We would like to ask them to anonymously e-mail us the answers to these two very simple questions. enquiries@unusualrisks.co.uk

Cryonics and Insurance Survey Results …

Unusual Risks, the Cryonics Insurance advisers are today announcing the results of the first ever Cryonics and Insurance Survey. After conducting their survey into the financial needs of the Cryonics community in the UK, they can now confirm that 90% of Cryonics people are either funding or intending to fund their Cryonics agreement using some form of Life Assurance policy.

The survey asked members of the UK Cryonics community to indicate how they intended to fund their Cryopreservation agreement. 90% of respondents to the survey indicated some form of Life Assurance, whilst 10% of respondents indicated their intention to fund their agreement using cash or some other method of investment.

Speaking about their survey, Chris Morgan, Marketing Manager of Unusual Risks Said;

‘The purpose of the Cryonics and Insurance survey was to connect with the UK Cryonics community and to gain a firm indication of how people fund or are intending to fund their Cryonics agreements. The Survey has also helped us to establish the different types of insurance that people are using to fund their Cryonics agreements’.

‘These results will help us to continue offering services to the Cryonics community and to assist us is designing new services to look after their continuing needs. Both the Cryonics Institute and Alcor Life Extension Foundation accept Insurance as a primary form of payment for their services, which makes Cryonics both accessible and affordable for all’.

As part of the survey Unusual Risks also asked people to specify which kind of Insurance Policy they were using or were intending to use to fund their Cryonics agreement. 62% indicated Whole of Life Assurance, 24% indicated Level Term Assurance, 4% indicated Over 50’s Life Assurance and 10% were either using cash or some other method of Investment.

Cryonics and Life Insurance … Which Is The Best Insurance For Cryonics?

Which is the best type of Life Insurance for Cryonics?

Over the last four years Unusual Risks have arranged many Life Assurance plans for the purpose of funding Cryonics. Once we’ve established the correct amount of Insurance that someone should have, the next question we are asked is normally related to the correct type of Insurance that someone should take out.

We thought it would be useful to describe some of the types of Life Insurance that are available in the United Kingdom and the ways in which they have been used by current members of Alcor Life Extension Foundation and The Cryonics Institute to fund their Cryopreservation agreements.

Whole of Life Assurance

This type of Life Insurance runs from inception of policy, right through until the point where there is a claim. This means the policy can be designed to meet all the required expenses of a Cryonics Suspension agreement. As the name “Whole of Life” Assurance would suggest it will run until the point in time where it is finally needed.

Many existing Cryonics members have already used Whole of Life Assurance as their their method of meeting their Cryonics expenses at death. As with all Insurance policies written for the purpose of Cryonics it is essential that the policy is either written into an Absolute Trust document or an irrevocable Trust deed.

Level Term Assurance

This type of Life Insurance runs from inception of the policy, through until the end of the fixed term set at outset. This means that the policy is normally used as a temporary form of meeting the expenses of Cryonics Suspension. As the name “Level Term” Assurance would suggest it provides a fixed amount of insurance will run for a set period of time.

Cryonics members have used Level Term Assurance as a temporary form of Insurance in the past, however it is normally used when there is certainty that there will be enough cash assets to pay for Cryonics in the future by some other means. Once again it is essential that the policy is either written into an Absolute Trust document or an irrevocable Trust deed.

Decreasing Term Assurance

This type of Life Insurance also runs from inception of the policy, through until the end of the fixed term set at outset. As the name “Decreasing Term” Assurance would suggest it provides a decreasing amount of insurance that reduces over a set period of time. It is NOT recommended that people use Decreasing Term Assurance for the purpose of funding Cryonics!

We have met a few Cryonics members that have used Decreasing Term Assurance as a temporary form of Insurance in the past and were totally unaware that they had been sold Decreasing Term Assurance. Decreasing Term Assurance is designed for insuring Mortgages and Loans and therefore is unsuitable for funding Cryonics.

Cryonics and Life Insurance … How Much Insurance Cover Do I Need?

How Much Insurance Cover Do I Need for Cryonics? …

This is the most frequently asked question by people taking our Life Insurance for the purpose of funding Cryonics.

Over the last four years we have advised literally scores of people about the correct amount of insurance to run alongside their Cryonics Funding Agreement held with either Cryonics Institute or Alcor life Extension Foundation.

People are rightly concerned about taking out the correct amount of insurance and a number in the UK have already turned to Unusual Risks for our help in assessing their Insurance needs.

Charles is 36 years of age and works in Technology Sales …

“I’m really interested in signing up for Cryonics, but I’m really not sure where to start in regards to the right amount of insurance, or the type of policy to take out in this country. I’m really not sure whether Cryonics is affordable and have no idea of what the monthly premiums are likely to be for the different options”.

Unusual Risks are independent insurance agents that are experienced at looking after existing members of both Cryonics Institute and Alcor Life Extension Foundation. Here’s some advice for those who may be considering taking out Life Insurance for the purpose of funding Cryonics.

1) Make sure your policy takes into account all costs that are likely to be encountered prior to the commencement of your Cryonics suspension. For example, make sure that all costs relating to international transportation and any standby team assisting you are included  in the amount of insurance that you take out.

2) Make certain that you take into account any possible currency fluctuations between the UK and USA when calculating the amount of Insurance. Both of the leading Cryonics organisations are based in the USA and make their charges in US Dollars, so it’s important to take into account both current and possible future currency exchange rates when calculating an appropriate level of Insurance.

3) Be sure to consider possible future prices of Cryonics when taking out Insurance, because the cost of Cryonics in today’s money may not be the final cost that you will be required to pay for the services in the future. It is important to make certain that any insurance policy makes provision for any inflation increases that may happen in the future.

Unusual Risks are experienced at providing advice on these and many other issues surrounding Cryonics and Insurance. We are always happy to discuss your requirements in detail and provide quotations across all Cryonics provider options before you make any decisions.

And Charles?

We provided four different quotations for him ranging from Insurance amounts of £60,000 through to £215,000 and monthly premiums starting at £28 right through to £96 per month. This enabled him to assess all of his options and decide which Cryonics Provider’s agreement was best for him.
